Unfortunately it isn’t always obvious when your roof is leaking.
There are several ways to tell if your roof is leaking. However, your roof could be leaking into your attic space or even down into a wall without showing any visible signs inside your home.
Here are a few signs of a roof leak that you should always be looking out for.
1 – Water Stains
A common sign that water is getting into your home is when you find a water stain on your wall or ceiling. These are typically easy to spot, especially if the leak has been there for a while. If you suspect you have a roof leak you’ll want to address the issue quickly. Active roof leaks will not only damage the drywall and insulation but can also lead to peeling paint, mold and wood rot. In extreme cases the entire ceiling could collapse at some point.
2 – Missing Shingles or Flashing
Missing shingles on your roof is one of the earliest signs your roof may be leaking. If you suspect you may have a roof leak it is a good idea to check for missing shingles. This should be done after a big storm. Check for shingles in your yard and see if there are any caught in your gutters. You may be able to look up at the roof and see some that were blown off during high winds.
3 – Damaged Pipe Boots And Vents
High winds and hail can wreak havoc on more than just your shingles. It is important to check your vents and boots to ensure there is still a good seal on them. The seals can be damaged during a storm and allow water to leak inside. They can also wear out over time. Just like tires on your car pipe boots will need to be replaced before your roof is ready for replacement.
